My dr. said that he wanted to remove the striae in my eye by lifting the flap and filling the space with saline, thus causing a deliberate corneal edema. It would then take several weeks or so before my vision would be back in full. This procedure sounds differnt from anything else I've read about removal of striae, and I was wondering if any of you could comment on this? Thank you.

The answer is that there are a lot of methods to remove striae. I have performed the above procedure with some success, but it does not work all of the time. At the American Academy of ophthalmology meeting, some (but not all) of the experts said that they have moved away from this technique. The problem is that there are no great techniques when striae are not addressed immediately. If striae can not be removed with the procedure ou described, the striae can almost always be removed with flap suturing - but flap suturing is a procedure that is generally only done if other methods fail at smooting out the cornea. The sutures generally only stay in place for 2-3 weeks - but they work by placing the flap on stretch.
The doctor who I was very impressed with at the American Academy of ophthalmology meeting was again Mark Speaker - who is beased in manhattan.
I hope this is helpful and not to confusing. The one constant with striae removal is that time is the critical factor in whether these procedures to remove striae will be succesful
Best of luck

Thank you once again, Dr. Trattler for your advice. After pushing my surgeon to finally do something about my eye, he is going to do the procedure on Friday. I'm very nervous (in part due to my loss of trust in him). I still don't understand why he didn't do this right away when I had a better chance of getting rid of the striae, but at least he's finally doing something about it. Anyway, if it doesn't work, I'll be calling Dr. Speaker and taking a trip to the Big Apple. I hope and pray that I won't have to do that. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again, Beth.
