"Flap wrinkles returned - smooth over on their own?" Posted by Jennifer on 14:14:09 7/12/2000

It's six months since I've had a flap refloat. Actually I had two refloats. The first one didn't work so the doc did it again two or three weeks later. After the second refloat there were still wrinkles but they had moved out of my visual field. I went in for a six month check a couple of weeks ago and the wrinkles had moved back into my visual field, leaving me with 20/50 vision in that eye. My doctor says he's seen wrinkles smooth themselves out, and doesn't see why I can't expect that after another 6 months. He's very optimistic, but he always is.
What do you think? Do you know of cases where wrinkles move and/or smooth out that long after surgery? Any chance another refloat could help this far down the line (although I'm not sure the pain would be worth it).
Truthfully I'm not that unhappy with the results. I see 20/25 in my good eye and it's amazing how well that eye carries me. Just wondering if I should accept that as my reality or keep hoping for better.
Thanks for any input,
Jennifer

My friend just had flap wrinkles removed after about six months I'm sure it was not easy but with a good experienced Dr. it's possible, the key is experienced.

Hi, I might be ken's friend! I had wrinkles left in the flap last sept (1999). The first try was a flap relift and refloat, but that was not successful, probably for a variety of reasons that I won't bother with. That is often the treatment used, but what worked on me in the end was two treatments (last one just a couple weeks ago actually, so even more than six months) where the surgeon literally stretch and smoothed the flap with those small sponges after putting it back (after enhancing). This worked almost completely -- just a whisper of one wrinle is left. I don't think it is bothering my vision in the slightest.
I'm with Ken, I thin surgical skill is key -- this fellow has a couple decades in cornea surgery overall, and was very careful, confident, and patient in the treatment. He did not rusk it.
I am researching surgeons experienced in treated flap striae in the Denver area. You certainly should have a second opinion, because it is my understanding that if your vision is limited by flap striae - that time alone will not make the striae improve
I will get back with you, or post again in 72 hours

My flap was relifted after 7 months to remove a large wrinkle down the center of my vision. What remains is a whitish scar which seems to be fading. Do you think it will disappear with time?
