I'm currently researching LASIK surgery as an option. I have set up consultations with two surgeons in my area Dr. Andrew Barrett and Dr. Frederic Kremer. Does anyone have any comments/recommendations for a surgeon in my area?

Thanks for your help.
Cindy

I spent three years in Philadelphia at the Univ. of Pennsylvania (for my residency -which I finished in '96). Dr. Stephen Orlin is an excellent surgeon and is accomplished at LASIK (The number for the Univ. of Pennsylvania is ). Dr. Kremer is well known and has a tremendous amount of experience. Ihave not met him, but he writes a monthly article about laser vision correction in a Journal called "Review of Ophthalmology"

I hope this is helpful. Best of luck

I did a fellowship year of training at the U. of Penn. Scheie Eye Institute and can agree with Dr. Trattler that Dr. Orlin is an excellent ophthalmologist.

DR. STEPHEN ORLIN DID MY LASIK PROCEDURE AT PENN MEDICINE AT RADNOR ON MARCH 9, 2004. I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WITH THE RESULTS. I WENT FROM 20/200 IN THE RIGHT EYE AND LEFT EYE TO 20/20 VISION, AND NO LONGER NEED GLASSES AFTER 30 YEARS. I HAD A PRE-SURGICAL PRESCRIPTION OF -8.75 OR -9.00 IN THE RIGHT EYE, AND (I THINK) -7.25 IN THE LEFT EYE. I COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING BELOW THE BIG E ON THE EYE CHART WITH THE RIGHT EYE, AND AM NOW DRIVING AT NIGHT WITHOUT GLASSES! IT IS TRULY REMARKABLE. DR. ORLIN IS A SUPERB PHYSICIAN. SINCE I HAVE INSULIN-DEPENDENT DIABETES, WHICH IS WELL-CONTROLLED (I HAVE NO COMPLICATIONS WHATSOEVER), I WANTED SOMEONE WHO WOULD BE VERY COGNIZANT OF THAT, AND KEEP THAT IN MIND. I AM DELIGHTED WITH HIM AND WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE WHO NEEDS OR WANTS LASIK. IT IS REALLY A LIFE-ALTERING EXPERIENCE. HE ALSO HAS A WEBSITE UP WHICH DESCRIBES HIS PHILOSOPHY OF CARE (http://www.orlin.medem.com). THE STAFF ARE EXCELLENT. LISA PRITCHARD IS THE PERSON TO CONTACT TO GET AN APPT. WITH HIM. HIS PARTNER, MICHAEL SULEWSKI, IS ALSO EXCELLENT.
I HOPE THIS INFORMATION IS HELPFUL.

SINCERELY,
JANICE B. TEHIE, PH.D.

Cindy, I live in Newark DE too, and have scheduled an initial evaluation with Dr. Barrett. I would be interested to know whether you had the surgery, and if so, who performed it. If it was Dr. Barrett, do you have any feedback you could give me? Thanks!

I happened to see your message on the message board here. I had LASIK with Dr. Stephen Orlin on March 9, 2004, at the Penn Medicine at Radnor office in Radnor PA, on King of Prussia Road. He does it there on the second Tuesday of every month. I have had no complications and have gone from 20/200 to 20/20 vision after 30 years. Dr. Orlin is a really superb surgeon. I would highly recommend him. It is worth the trip from Delaware, which is only about 25 miles from here. I live in Malvern PA, about 40 minutes from Philadelphia by train, and went to Scheie Eye Institute in Philadelphia the day after surgery for follow-up care. I think it is well worth the trip. The Scheie Eye group is definitely the best.
I hope this helps you.
Sincerely,
Janice B. Tehie, Ph.D.

I just had wavefront custom view (VISX S4)surgery by Dr. Gary Markowitz of DE Eye Care, and he was great. My surgery was in the morning, and I was 20/20 by my afternoon followup appointment. One good thing about Dr. Markowitz is that he is the doctor who treats you pre-op and post-op at all of your followup visits. He is also very experienced. http://www.delawareeyecare.com/
