I had Lasik surgery nearly 3 weeks ago and I am still very nearsighted: 20/70 in the dominant eye and 20/150 in the weak eye. We were aiming for 20/20 and 20/60..
Because of the poor initial results, I am assuming an enhancement will be neccessary in a few months and wonder if I might not be better off just shooting for 20/20 in both eyes. On the other hand, reading glasses after age 40 would probably be as inconvenient as distant glasses. (I am now 38)...so...what to do???
One thing I realize is that even with my nearsightedness in both eyes, the difference between the right and left vision doesn't seem to bother me.
I have heard very little feedback from patients on this board who have monovision and how they like it? I wonder if any lasik surgeons could tell me how most of their patients feel about their monovision??
Some people love monovision and some can't stand
it. Before you correct the vision in your non
dominant eye, try correcting the dominant eye for
distance with a contact and undercorrect the
nondominant eye with a weaker contact. If you
like it then you can proceed accordingly.
Good luck

It works for me. I only lasiked my dominant eye & would be very sorry if I did my left (my good reading eye). My right eye sees even the computer totally blurry. I would have to wear glasses most of the day, since my job involves reading & the computer. When I'm looking far, my right eye takes over; when reading or on the computer, my left. Neither eye seems to interfere with the other, & I don't have a problem with perception. You would have to have your less-dominant eye lasiked for reading, so I don't have experience with that--I just left mine alone. It's probably about 20-100 (was 20-200 my first visit). Both eyes were -1.75; now my lasiked eye is -.50. Good luck with your decision!

I spend lots of time on a computer too and my concern with having 20/20 in both eyes is that I'll be just as bad off as when I was nearsighted and 20/500 in both eyes...needing glasses just as much. I think I am determined to give this monovision a try!
Thanks for your response!

The place I went for Lasik (Lasik Eye Center in Torrance, CA) has soft contacts they loan you to see how you like the monovision. I decided after about 20 minutes. I walked outside the office & there was the pharmacy. I was amazed that I could actually read the signs. Then I looked out in the parking lot & could see detail on cars, the mailbox, etc. Wow! A whole world opened up. Then I went back in the office & the TV, which was mounted up on the far wall, had closed captioned letters going across it. I could read them! Even the small ones. Then I picked up a magazine & could read it (my eyes were dialated--I can still read when they are, I don't know why). I booked the surgery for that Saturday!
