I am 32 and planning on having lasik surgery
within 2 months. I am now researching doctors in
my area (Detroit, MI/Windsor, ON). I have read
several books on lasik and am interested in
monovision (i.e., obviating/postponing the need
for reading glasses). I have no astigmatism and
my eyes are -2.50 and -2.75. At my age and with
my eyesight should I be considering monovision or
am I too young for this? From what I read,
doctors seem to encourage this more for people
around age 40 and over. Thank you for your advice on
this matter.

Lynn:

Monovision can be done at any age. However
the patients that perceive the most benefit are
patients in the middle of their forties. In your
case, you have at least 10 to 12 years before
being presbyopic and needing monovision.
Most 32 year old patients would choose to
have a full correction because they would
enjoy good distance and near vision for about
10-12 years. Monovision would have one of
the eyes clear at near, but not as clear to
distance especially comparing it to the other
eye. However, individuals are different and
their visual needs are different.

My advice for all patients at any age is to try
monovision using contact lenses to simulate
the result after surgery. If you like the result,
you may proceed with monovision.

Good Luck.
