One of the doctors I visited was really pushing monovision for people my age (48)while another basically discouraged it since I have never worn contacts and hence never experienced it. I have 2 questions:
1) How many people adapt to monovision who have never experienced it with contacts?
2) Will the weaker eye in a monovsion procedure continue to get weaker possibly necessitating an enhancement a few years down the raod?
The first key is to find out whether monovision is comfortable by spending some time with monovision contact lenses. By determining ahead of time whether you are comfortable with monovision, you can help plan your surgery.
The general rule is that 80% of people adapt to monovision. For my patients, I always conduct a trial with contact lenses to see if they adapt. If the patient adapts, then that means that monovision is comfortable - so we may proceed with monovision LASIK.
I hope this helps. There are many excellent LASIK surgeons in Chicago. Dr. Parag Majmudar may be a helpful doctor to see for an opinion on this matter (he is listed in the doctor directory).
Best of luck
