Several years ago, I was treated for a herpes infection in my eye and wonder if this would have any implications for Lasik or lasar corrections?

Cathy,
A history of herpes simplex corneal infection is a contraindication for LASIK and PRK. HSV keratitis can spontaneously recur at anytime in the future and any corneal trauma may initiate a recurrence. Therefore, elective laser vision correction surgery is not recommended.
Sometimes the infection can result in corneal scarring. In special instances of anterior corneal scarring, a laser treatment (PTK) to help reduce or remove the scar may be attempted.

If a doctor knew that one had herpes before, wouldn't he know that problems can occur and not
to continue with the surgury? I got the herpes
again and my surgury was not successful. Now I
have to wear glasses to see close and far. One
eye was redone, that didn't help. Is there hope
that in time, my sight will be better?

cathy,
i am sorry to tell you that herpes infections in the eye are one of the more serious reasons not to have laser surgery. the laser light is ultraviolet, and this same uv light is what can cause a recurrence of the infection. it would therefore be unwise to use the laser for elective reasons.
if you haven't had a recurrence in several years, you can feel comfortable that it is unlikely to recur very often. people who have recurrences in the first two years, tend to have many recurrences. still, i wouldn't risk your precious eyesight on the laser.
if your correction is mild enough, you may consider the corneal rings, as these do not require uv light. discuss this with a surgeon in your area.
