I am getting evaluated by 2 doctors. One uses the Vizx S2 and the other the LADAR flying spot laser. I am mildly Myopic. How do these compare?

Please do not choose your surgeon based on the laser. Make your decision as to which doctor provides the best care- including care before, during, and after LASIK. Who gives the most personal service, etc. There have been no studies showing that one laser provides better treatment than another laser.

Best of luck

Denise,

I have never used the VISX laser. I have used the Summit Apex laser which is similar to the VISX laser in that it is a "broad beam" laser.

I now use the LADARVision laser exclusively. In terms of outcomes (ie which laser - VISX or LADAR - gives better vision a larger percentage of the time), I do not know the answer.

I can tell you that in comparing my results with the Summit Apex (similar to the VISX), my results with the LADARVision laser are better. I think the LADARVision laser has advantages over the VISX S2. Specifically, the tracking system of the LADARVision adds a margin of safety and accuracy. Secondly, the small flying spot of the LADARVision system creates a smoother shape to the cornea than a broad beam laser. Thirdly, the ability to vary the treatment zone according to the patients pupil size can reduce halo after LASIK.

Lastly, I will tell you that results are surgeon dependent as well as laser dependent...this is surgery after all and the human touch and surgeon experience is the biggest key to your surgical result.

Good luck,

Shannon Wong, MD
