I had Lasik two months ago. I started out at -9 in right eye, and -8 in left, with moderate astigmatism in both eyes.
Right eye went fine, but has regressed to -3.5. Left eye was aborted due to irregular and slightly torn flap.
One month later I developed symptoms of a macular hole, which only this week appeared on exam. Has anyone else had a similar problem? I suspect that the development of the hole was related to the pressure caused by the flap procedure during Lasik.
Doctors or patients, please respond.

1. Carol- I have never heard of an association between macular holes and LASIK. Since so many LASIKs are done, if there was actually an association - there would have to be an increased risk of developing a macular hole after LASIK as compared to the general population. This has not been mentioned in any conferences or in any journals that I know of.
Macular holes can be surgically repaired. Please let us know how things turn out.
2. jyoti - you will have to talk with your doctor to find out why you are unhappy with your vision. It is impossible to know anything about your eyes without examining them

i believe that there may have been isolated reports of macular holes after lasik, but most researchers feel that this is nothing more than the normal incidence of macular holes. the most common patients with this disorder are middle aged females.
i will try to run a literature search for this problem.

dear carol,
i just searched through the literature from 1997-1999 and could not find any articles referring to macular holes forming after lasik surgery. i found macular holes after facial surgery, but not what we are most interested in.
who did your surgery? i practice in agoura hills, across the valley from you. i can recommend a Dr. Yossi Sidikaro in beverly hills, who is probably the most skilled retinal surgeon i have ever worked with. he might be able to tell you about the possibilities for further treatment of your condition.
good luck,
debra tennen, md
