Can I have Lasik done if I am pregnant? My surgery is set for July and I may be pregnant.
Thanks!

You should not have lasik if you think you are pregnant. It is one of the relative contraindications for laser refractive surgery outlined in the original FDA Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)study. Also, your refraction can change during pregnancy.

The reason for caution in pregnancy is the
possibility that your refraction may be different
due to hormonal changes. Also there is the rare
possibility that your response to the surgery
might not be usual. This holds true for the
period after pregnancy if you are nursing. There
is no harm to the fetus but your results might be
affected. If you have the surgery and then get
pregnant a few months after it should have no
significant effects.

In your reply to Susan on 6/27/99, you said that when a pregnant woman has LASIK the operation will not affect the fetus. My sister got pregnant within weeks after LASIK. She used these eyedrops--TobraDex, FML and ACULAR after the operation.
Will the hormone in these eyedrops have any effect on the fetus?

Dear Susan,
Sorry but the answer is NO. Do not surprise your doctor with"I think I'm pregnant "after the surgery. Plan to have the surgery before you become
pregnant. You only have to use medication for one week post-op LASIK.

susan,
unfortunately, i have had the experience of treating two patients who were either pregnant at the time of surgery or became so shortly after surgery. both women went on to have moderate haze in the cornea and regression of the effect of the surgery. after delivery and breast feeding, we were able to retreatment both these patients with excellent results, and the truth is they were thrilled to be able to see ok without glasses and use spectacles for really sharp 20/20 vision during the time they had to wait prior to enchancement. the cause of this scarring has to do with increased protein formation stimulated by increased hormone levels during pregnancy.
but the bottom line for me is that this is elective surgery, and if it's possible for you to wait for either the pregnancy or the surgery, i would. i advise patients to wait at least three months after lasik to get pregnant, and to wait at least six weeks after breast feeding prior to having lasik.
good luck with both decisions!!
